Mathematics is not Arithmetic, as the common man believes. Also, mathematical thinking is not logical thinking as many a scholar thinks. Though the subjects like Geometry provide one of the best examples of deductive logic, the mathematical thinking is much more than logical thinking.
The department of mathematics was established in the year 1965 and year of starting BSc (Maths) was 1985. The main aim of the department is to inculcate the habit of mathematical thinking among students.
“Practicals in Mathematics” has been introduced in the syllabi which help to teach mathematics in an interactive way rather than the usual passive presentation.
To promote active learning, the teachers usually ask questions and try to develop the theory based on the answers and typical examples. Also, teachers encourage students to participate in various intercollegiate competitions and national level exams like Madhava Mathematics competition (MMC).
The department caters to overall development of the students through various activities like Fun In Maths, Problem solving sessions for MMC and IIT-JAM and special attention to weak students. Also, the department conducts Remedial coaching for FYBCom ATKT students in the subject Mathematical and Statistical techniques.
